When we are young, we have no trouble finding Adventure in our Journey. Paint, cardboard, duct tape, yarn, and construction paper. Those were the tools of my creativity when I was a kid. All those items were readily available and I had an art box with lots of bits and bobs in it. (Actually, I STILL have that box with the items at the bottom remnants of my childhood exploits.) My parents had a Sears catalog store and every refrigerator box became a coveted play house in my bedroom. I still have the old steak knife I used to cut windows and doors in those boxes. Crayons to color window curtains and flower boxes were always close at hand. Creativity was my life line, my identity, and my world. Last Summer, I relived some of the “big box” glory by making a submarine.
Are you an Empty Nester that is searching to find your identity again? What makes you so excited that when you talk about it your eyes sparkle, you talk a little faster and louder, and it just soothes your soul? That is what makes your SOUL SING. When you find it, you just know. You may be finding it for the first time or you may be greeting it like an old friend.
I have come to grips and now eagerly anticipate the return of ME. The wonderful individual who no longer has the daily responsibilities of keeping little people alive. I find myself thinking and searching, “What do I want to do?” And the answer is ALL OF IT! Watercolor, pastel, acrylic, pottery, papermaking, glass blowing, crochet, macramé.
I have taken my first art classes since high school and have been working with watercolor. It has been a long time and I really feel like a beginner. I have joined several watercolor specific Facebook pages that are geared to beginners. The artwork I see from beginners is amazing and gives me hope. However, the one common theme we share is the wonder of what we don’t know. Is it me or the paper? Are the high end paints really that much better? What brushes should I use? Who has the best tutorials for learning?
We truly live when we journey to find our new passions, the courage to try something new and maybe even a little outlandish, and to gather those around us who are also on the same quest. Follow along as this Empty Nester finds her way back to her Soul and the fun adventure along the way. Have a front row seat as we try new things such as pottery and glass blowing, explore products and tutorials, and hopefully, find inspiration in your own journey of what makes your SOUL SING. There truly is Adventure in the Journey.
